Namazu, or Catfish, is known in Japanese mythology for causing earthquakes from the deep muck under the island, Thrashing about causing seismic tremors when let unguarded by the god Kashima. In this depiction of Namazu, we decided to focus on the fish with the gourd used to restrain Namazu-san attached to its head, signifying a captive restraint in its movements deep underwater.
